Caucus Resolution: Bills Of Rights

There are two very significant concerns that have become evident over the past 8 years, threatening both the economic health and the very foundational fabric of America.

First, the great mass of Americans seem to be unaware of the foundational principles of our liberty; namely the Bill of Rights. Indeed, a recent study presented basic passages of the Bill of Rights to random passers-by on the street, who were told that these were proposals now being considered by Congress. An alarming number of respondents said that they found the proposed “new laws” to be “too liberal!”

Second, there is a grave danger that regimes hostile to the United States may very well begin to print American paper currency en masse, with the specific goal of flooding the market with useless counterfeit currency, devaluing and destabilizing the dollar. We know, in fact, that Saddam Hussein’s regime was involved in just such an effort.

Finally, we are involved in a great ideological global effort presently to introduce the idea of liberty to people and cultures who have never known anything comparable.

The solution to these problems is radically common sense.

What sets America apart from other nations is not our monuments – the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, The Great Seal – but our principles, enshrined in the Bill of Rights.

The most widely distributed and universally desired product the United States produces is our currency.

Therefore this proposal: let us retire the old bills, with pretty pictures of monuments, and introduce a new design of currency: Bills Of Rights.

Each denomination would carry, up its reverse, a passage from the Bill of Rights:

Millions of Americans waiting in bank lines, sitting at bars and restaurants, and riding buses, often take the time to read whatever is available. Within a short time, tens of millions of Americans who have never read these sacred, inalienable rights will have been exposed to their precious meaning.

What repressive dictator is going to want to print millions and millions of little pamphlets detailing the rights that he is denying his people?

English is the most commonly understood language on Earth. In madrassas in Pakistan, in Hutu huts in Africa, in Shiite safe houses in Iraq and living rooms in Iran, billions of people will be exposed to these revolutionary ideas.

"A resolution In Support Of Bills Of Rights.

As it is the foundational principles of America, espoused in the Bill of Rights, not the buildings and symbols common to any culture, that makes our Republic uniquely a bastion of liberty and beacon to the world; and,

And, whereas the cuts in funding of civics and history lessons in American public schools over the last decade have diminished an entire generation’s knowledge of these foundational principles; and,

And, whereas we are now engaged in a global ideological struggle that would be vastly aided by the wide distribution of the knowledge of these principles;

And, whereas numerous technological tools, graphics and watermarks have not discouraged regimes hostile to the United States from counterfeiting our currency;

Be It Resolved that it is the official position of the Democratic Party that the present currency be redesigned to include, upon the reverse of each bill, a passage from the Bill of Rights, not to exclude any."

"Who Killed The Constitution?" Murder Mystery Impeachment Event 1-5-2008

Marilyn at the Mercury Cafe in Denver has been kind enough to host another "Who Killed The Constitution?" impeachment event on Saturday, January 5 (2008!) at 7PM. There will be grog, live music, interesting stuff onstage, and the Mercury has an excellent menu. And you need to get out of the house anyway. You're starting to look yellow.

"Who Killed The Constitution?" is a game that the whole room can play: A news clip or suspect quote (okay, a lie) from Bush, Cheney, et al, is projected onto a screen. You will compete, based upon Evidence and Law cards dealt out beforehand, to see who can find the most felonies during the night. The person who finds the most felonies becomes "Prosecutor Of The Week," and prizes will be awarded.

Progressive experimental rock band Orphaned Gears will cap the event.

They're that band you've been dying to hear, and will never forget.

Plan on getting a cab or a room.  You won't be happy if you have to to leave.

About me: I am the author of Corruption & Cover-Ups of the Bush White House Unmasked. I have been studying and documenting the crimes of the Bush White House since 2002. I can help you simplify and explain these crimes to our distracted friends. And, God knows,  we all need help in that regard.

Check back here for updates, or go to http://www.mercurycafe.com/index.html

...  and bring some wishy-washy Dems with you who could use some inspiration to join the fight, will you?

See you then!

Why They Won't Impeach: They Wish The Power To Betray Us For Themselves

It isn't a secret that Bill Clinton recieved great wads of campaign cash from the Chinese.

And it was obvious to me, in 1998, when the news came of Clinton's sale of arms to the Chinese --including computer harware that could be used in nuclear guidance systems -- that this was an impeachable offense. It was the sort of news that any red-blooded GOP operative would have creamed over. I was astounded that they missed it.

But that isn't what happened.

The GOP deliberately steered clear of prosecuting crimes that would effect the profits of the arms industry.

They did the same in 1987 with Reagan, and they're doing the exact same thing, right now, with George W. Bush.

You see, if Clinton had been held accountable for these much more serious crimes against the Republic, it would have set a precedent that would have brought to life the laws against selling weapons to our enemies. This, in turn, would have cut profits to the weaons makers -- the very people who fill the coffers of the GOP each election season.

Reagan wasn't held to account for the same reason -- bad for business for the Democrats. Same with Bush.

And now, China has been granted "Most Favored Nation" trading status, again and again, by both parties, in spite of their human rights record. And it has been written into law, now -- a little fail-safe, just in case -- that it's perfectly legal for American military contractors to sell weapons and equipment to our enemies, even to terrorists.

THIS is what has happened:

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

"We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

Dwight D Eisenhower

Farewell Address

1961

And THIS is what has happened:

"The committee finds that the matter of national defense should be above and separated from lobbying and the use of political influence by self-interested groups ...

"The committee finds, further, that any close associations between munitions and supply companies on the one hand and the service departments on the other hand ... constitutes an unhealthy alliance in that it brings into being a self-interested political power which operates in the name of patriotism and satisfies interests which are, in large part, purely selfish ...

"The committee finds, further, that munitions companies engaged in bribery find themselves involved in the civil and military politics of other nations, and that this is an unwarranted form of intrusion into the affairs of other nations and undesirable representation of the character and methods of the people of the United States."

The Nye Report on the Munitions Industry

U.S. Congress, February 24, 1936

The solution will never come from inside the beltway, where the endless race to out-whore the other guy or gal keeps "our representatives" on a perpetual moving sidewalk that always leads to the door of the arms maker.

"Something happens to them when they get to Congress," said the inside-the-beltway political professor (whose name I can't recall) on the radio yesterday. "I mean, even starting from orientation. No matter why they run, why they came there to begin with, they seem to forget ..."

What is the solution? Campaign Finance Reform. We have to end the system of legalized bribery known as "contributions," and we must divest ourselves of the illusion that this is free speech. It is not free speech; it is bribery, plain and simple -- and the biggest bribe wins.

The necessity is to amend the Constitution to provide public financing of campaigns, and to illegalize bribes (campaign contributions).

That can be done by a 2/3 vote of congress, followed by a ratification of 3/4 of the states; or by the second method (which has never been used): "The legislatures of two-thirds of the states vote to call for a convention at which constitutional amendments can be proposed. Amendments proposed by the convention would again require ratification by the legislatures
of three-fourths of the states."

I support the latter.

Shall we get busy?

“A President Is Impeachable If He Attempts To Subvert The Constitution.” -- James Madison

Every ten minutes, an innocent Iraqi civilian dies as a result our illegal invasion.

Every ten hours, the son or daughter of an
American mother and father is killed in Iraq.

Every 10 days, 2 billion dollars of American money disappears into the bloody sands of Iraq.

"But impeachment would distract us for the next year."

Nope. Mr. Cheney has refused to comply with subpeonas, the crime for which Nixon was about to be impeached.

Beyond that, both
Bush and Cheney have confessed, on videotape, ignoring the law in many different cases. They couch this as "we have a disagreement," but the law is not open-ended.

We have been failed by Congress, the
Executive branch, the Judiciary, and the media.

The constitution is the same -- and the new laws simply remain because they have yet to be challenged. The new crimes remain only because they have not been prosecuted.

There are
hundreds of impeachable offenses.

But only one or two need be prosecuted.

Start with violations of the False Statement Accountability Act.

Impeachment would be done in a few days.

In the words of David Swanson (afterdowningstreet), "no sleep until impeachment."

The oath of office taken by a member of Congress is relatively simple: "To protect and defend the Constitution." That's the job description.

For the primary duty of "protecting and defending the Constitution," these people make in excess of $165,000 a year. To fail to act in the face of flagrant, continuing violations of our sacred law would make these people simply parasites on the system.

But if they are, and will only act in their own self-interest, then we must show them that impeachment is in their own self-interest.

It is well-known that negative advertising works. An impeachment would provide 24 hour a day, 7 day a week negative advertising regarding crimes of the GOP.

And, for Heaven's sake, LET the Republicans tie Bush/Cheney around their collective ankle, and defend lying and treason. We should PAY them to do it, if neccessary!

So ...

Sit in your congressional representative's office and read the constitution aloud until you are arrested.

Protest outside that office with a sign that reads "Honk to impeach."

This is the do-or-die moment, folks. There will be ample time to feel powerless if this isn't reined in.

Right now, it can be called Bush's fault, and everyone can take political cover by saying they were duped. Fine.

Later, it won't be so easy, unless Dennis Kucinich or Ron Paul is elected, of course,

But let's do the right thing, right now -- and lead our leaders, as was intended by our Founders.

Thanks to David Swanson of AfterDowningStreet.org, and John Nichols, author of The Genius of Impeachment, for their thoughts and inspiration.

James Madison: “A President is impeachable if he attempts to subvert the Constitution.”

First, my liberal credentials:

First, my liberal credentials:

In November 2002, I became aware of the domestic spying program known as Total Information Awareness being deployed by the Pentagon, as well as numerous violations of Constitutional law and American principle by the Bush administration.

As a matter of patriotic responsibility, I devoted two years to researching and publishing my first book, Corruption & Cover-Ups of the Bush White House, Unmasked. I also volunteered on the US Senate campaign of Mike Miles, as well as the presidential campaigns of Dennis Kucinich and John Kerry. In 2004, I served as a delegate to the Colorado State Democratic Convention on behalf of Kucinich and Miles.

I designed and sold anti-Bush bumperstickers, and created two informational booklets: Did Bush Really Lie? and George W. Bush's National Security Record. Both booklets were produced at my own expense and distributed in waiting rooms, bus stations, and public restrooms throughout the Denver area.

In April, 2005, six months after Bush stole the 2004 election, my heart quit working. Baffled doctors could find no biological reason. I was fitted with a pacemaker, and have recovered fairly well.  It is my belief that I very nearly died of a broken heart.

In a word, I am committed.

Brief writing credits & other interesting factoids:

My work has been published extensively, beginning with record reviews and concert promotion pieces in the Columbia, SC entertainment magazine FreeTimes. In 1994 I interned at Columbia Radio Station WARQ, writing copy and providing voice-overs for radio commercials. One such ad was approved by Bally's Total Fitness for broadcast throughout the Southeast.

In 2000 I received Awards of Excellence for the short film Egg and the screenplay Our Hero Returns, from the Colorado Film/Video Institute (a collaboration of CU, ACC, RRCC). Out of a hundred projects produced, Egg was selected as one of three to be publicly screened by the school.

From November of 2000 though November 2001, I worked as a residential counselor to the developementally disabled through Community Intersections, a non-profit company. The live-in position required that I be responsible for the day-to-day care and mentoring of persons with cerebral palsy, autism, schitzophrenia, and severe brain injury.

I am a trained HealthRhythms (group empowerment drumming) facilitator.

My second book, the novel Secrets of the Napalm Moon, is currently being shopped for publication.
